Dog barking in crate at night all of a sudden

by galehudson

I noticed that my dog seems to be barking at night in her crate. This is at night when we are sleeping. She has no issues with me during the day when she is on her leash. I don't know what she is trying to communicate to me. I have tried to talk to her and she barks at me and seems to be making sounds that may or may not mean anything. Her demeanor is good when she's on her leash with me. Is this a common behavior or is there something different that I should be aware of?

You can try putting an egg in the crate or under the crate. You could also get some kibble or other treats. Once your dog has finished the food put it away and then give her another treat. Then close the crate door. If the noise continues you can have her wear a collar with a bell on it. Or buy a dog collar with a bell on it. If this is still too noisy then you can take your dog to a obedience class. If this continues then it may be best to look into training.

I think it is a good idea to try to give her something she likes to chew on. You could get her a treat like a piece of chicken, a bone or some dry dog food (if you don't feed dry food you could get a wet food treat. Sometimes dogs get the craving for a certain type of food and will continue to chew or gnaw on it for an extended period of time.

My dog does this sometimes too, even if I am not there. I think it is because it sounds like a distress bark. It may mean something is wrong but, I'm not sure.

by lindamay

Do you know what causes it? What happens when she does this?

by karli

She'll do this in the backyard or when she's home alone in the house. Sometimes she'll even cry when she's alone and does this.

by lindamay

So you mean when she does this she is home alone? How old is she?

by karli

I guess it is age-related. She's about 5.

by lindamay

What do you mean when she cries when she is alone?

by karli

Like she's in trouble or something. She's never done it when I'm around. I just figured it was just her personality and I'd see her do it in the morning when she comes home from her walk.

by lindamay

I don't know why she does this. She seems happy when she is with me. She's happy in her crate and seems to sleep better when she is home alone.

by karli

Yes, I know it seems odd that she'd be happy when she is home alone. I can imagine that, on the phone with you, I'd forget that she might be with you and feel that something bad has happened to her. She's very loyal.

by lindamay

I see. So maybe you'd see her cry when she is home alone, if you don't forget about her. I'd worry about that. I really love this pup. I can't believe that she is doing this. I really hope that it isn't a sign of something bad.

by karli

Yes, I'm sure you'll be worrying about her a lot if you continue to think about her when she is home alone. Let's focus on her well-being and think about how to help her.

by lindamay

I guess I just need to keep talking to her and think about her and not worry.

by lindamay

I know it's hard. I love this pup and I want to do what's best for her. Thank you so much for your help. I will do everything I can to make her happy.

by karli

And remember to focus on her, and not on yourself. That will help her.

by karli

It will help you too. But I don't think that you'll want to worry about yourself.

by karli

No, I'm the one who will worry about myself. It's natural. But I'd worry for her, and worry about doing what's best for her.

by lindamay

Thank you, I will try to look after her. Good luck.

by lindamay

You'll do fine.

by karli

Yes, I would. I would say that this is an important time for you, but also for this dog. You'll have to be focused on her. But I hope that you do the right thing.

by karli

I hope that I do.

by lindamay

I do too.

by karli

It's the right thing to do.

by lindamay

Yes, it is.

by karli

Good luck to both of you. And you are going to take care of yourself too.
