Term for male dog

What is the correct term for a male dog?

I heard dogs are either males or females? I don't think you can use a word that describes only a particular gender.

Example: the dog is a DAD.

Answer by Dr. Karen Davis, VCA Animal Hospital

You would want to refer to dogs as hens or cows if they are only male or female, and not as Dads or Moms.

My dog has just turned 3 years old, is a pitbull. Does he need to be neutered? And what would happen if I have a female dog and take her to another place? Will she have kids?

Answer by Michelle

We would talk about neutering your dog because if they become pregnant, a bitch will start looking for another family to live in. If your dog is living outside, a bitch can run off to get a mate.

If you have a female dog and adopt a male dog you would have a litter of puppies. There are lots of sites with pictures and videos of the process online.

What are the health issues I need to know about my cat?

Answer by Doctor Karen Davis, VCA Animal Hospital

In general, your cat is well and doing great. However, there are a few things you should be aware of, such as heartworms. Heartworms are found in domestic animals that live in wet, marshy areas and feed off of insects and snls. Your cat could be in danger of having these worms and not realize it. Signs of heartworms in a cat include coughing, difficulty breathing, or a bloodshot eye. Cats cannot spread heartworms, but if they are found, they should be taken to the veterinarian immediately.

Catnip!

Will catnip cure my cat of a cold?

Answer by Michelle

Catnip is an herb that is commonly found in grocery stores, but it is actually not good for a cat. It will actually make a cat more upset than normal and makes them sneeze. But since it is a natural calming agent for humans, I think it would be alright to try it.

The most important thing to remember about using catnip on your cat is that you need to keep it away from a vacuum cleaner, which can cause a choking hazard.

My cat has a tick. Should I see a vet?

I have an anxious, nervous cat. What should I do?

Answer by Tanya

When I had my first cat, he was always nervous and scared, but after a while he calmed down. I was in the house alone with him a lot and when I left, he acted a little funny. This is something you'll see with cats, so the best thing to do is talk to your vet about it. You can also look up signs of anxiety in the book "Your Cat Is Not Crazy." Answer by Doctor Karen Davis, VCA Animal Hospital

This is not the beginning of a cold. If your cat has a sore or a scratch, it can often cause a runny nose. Try to bathe your cat and dry him off as soon as you can. Then get him to a vet for a checkup.

I have one kitten and it just recently started eating dry food, which is a new thing. What is the best food to feed her?

Answer by Dr. Karen Davis, VCA Animal Hospital

It's important to feed the right type of food to your kitten. Try to feed high-quality food that is specifically designed for the development of the kitten's life stage. Dry food or kitten formula that was designed for a much older kitten, or canned food that is too hard, is not a good choice.
